A better idea starts with a clearer problem
Move from a vague concept to a focused prototype.
Describe the need
Identify who faces the problem, when it occurs and what a better outcome would look like. Distinguish an observed need from a solution you already prefer.
Name the constraints
Budget, skills, available parts, environment and maintenance affect design. Recording constraints early makes comparisons between approaches useful.
Test the hardest assumption
A prototype does not need every feature. Its purpose may be to check a mechanism, a measurement or whether a user understands an interaction.
Review what changed
Compare results with the question you tested. Document what worked, what failed and which assumption to examine next. Each version should teach you something specific.
Take the next step
Write down one question this guide raised. Identify what you would need to observe, compare or learn before turning it into a project.
